Make sure your piercing has completely healed before trying out any new jewellery. Piercers use hypoallergenic jewellery for fresh piercings, and this must have a nickel content of less than 0.05 percent. Most use nickel-free titanium jewellery for first piercings, and some employ [[Special:MyLanguage/PTFE|PTFE]] (Teflon). They should never use 14-carat gold, as this contains allergenic [[Special:MyLanguage/Metalle|metals]] such as [[Special:MyLanguage/Zink|zinc]], [[Special:MyLanguage/Zinn|tin]], [[Special:MyLanguage/Nickel|nickel]], and [[Special:MyLanguage/Blei|lead]]. The latter two, in particular, are an absolute no-no for piercings.
 
Experienced piercers recommend minimum gauges of 1.2 millimetres for ears, noses, and eyebrows; 1.6 millimetres for chests, stomachs, lips, and tongues; and 2 millimetres for the genitals.
