Body organ

At around two square metres in area, the skin is the body’s biggest organ. It protects you against ultraviolet radiation and other environmental influences, helps regulate your body temperature, and contains pressure, pain and taste receptors that enable you to interact with the world around you.

In piercing and tattooing, the skin is also a canvas for many different forms of body art. Piercing involves all three layers of your skin: the self-regenerating epidermis, the dermis underneath it, and the hypodermis, or subcutaneous layer.
Good technique and aftercare are essential in ensuring that any piercing heals and the skin around it recovers properly.
