Nipple piercings

Type of piercing

Nipple piercings are popular with men and women alike. They can be placed horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, though the choice of jewellery (bars and rings) is biggest for the first of these. If your nipple is big enough, you can have more than one piercing. Since these will cross, the first hole must heal completely before you have the second piercing.

Healing: Your nipple piercing should heal in three to six months. During the early stages of healing, you should clean it twice a day with a damp Q-Tip and spray it with wound disinfectant. We also recommend protecting it with a plaster at first, so that dirt doesn’t get into the wound and your clothes don’t rub against it. You should also avoid wearing tight-fitting tops, and steer clear of exercise for a while.

Risks: Nipple piercings are no more hazardous than any other type, but if you’re a woman you should ensure that your areola isn’t pierced, as this increases the risk of mastitis, a breast inflammation.

If you experience redness and pain in your breast, or fever, or swollen lymph nodes in your armpits, see a doctor straight away.
If the piercing is too close to the surface, it may grow out or be torn out. It must therefore be done carefully, using the right gauge of jewellery, if it is to remain attractive.
