An industrial or scaffold piercing is a long barbell passing through two helix piercings in the upper part of your ear, normally the cartilage. There are various ways to do an industrial. Some piercers make two holes at once and insert the jewellery, while others start with a simple helix, wait till it heals to see where the channel should go, and then do a second helix piercing to connect the two holes.

Healing: An industrial needle piercing should heal in about three to five months; a punched one in two to four weeks.

Risks: The secret of a good industrial piercing is getting the angle right. If it’s wrong, it puts pressure on the cartilage, which can cause pain, infection, and proud flesh, meaning excessive granulation tissue.
